Slack is a collaboration hub that enables real-time communications and connections in a searchable platform for real-time messaging, content sharing, learning, and more. Slack can be used with Canvas, Outlook, Google Drive, Zoom, and many other apps currently used at ASU as well.

Integrating Slack and Canvas

The Slack tool in ASU's Canvas LMS allows instructors to create a Slack workspace directly from a Canvas course. Creating a Slack workspace will automatically synchronize Canvas course enrollments with the Slack workspace. Students can use Slack to receive grade notifications and view upcoming assignments.

Advantages of Slack Workspaces

Slack creates a digital classroom community that empowers students to support each other's learning and contribute in diverse ways. You can organize your course conversations into topic-based channels. With Slack, instructors can unburden themselves from email and keep the class on track to ensure their success.

Creating a Course Slack Workspace in Canvas

  1. Navigate to the 'Settings' page in your ASU Canvas course.
  2. Select the 'Navigation' tab.
  3. Enable the 'Slack' tool and click the 'Save' button (alternatively, you may drag the link and place it in the order you prefer).
  4. Click on the 'Slack' sidebar link in the Course Navigation menu
  5. Click 'Create Workspace' to proceed.
